  22. The drivers provided on this disk are intended for for use with
  23. computers running Microsoft Windows 3.0 and NCR's 77C22E chip.
  24. If your 77C22E is mounted on an adapter card, be sure to remove
  25. any other VGA video adapters.  Otherwise, conflicts could prevent
  26. the computer from recognizing NCR's VGA.  If your computer has a
  27. non-NCR 77C22E VGA system on the mother board, you must refer to
  28. your owners manual or the manufacturer for instructions on how to
  29. disable the existing VGA before using NCR's 77C22E equipped VGA card.
  30.  
  31. The drivers provided make use of a 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768
  32. (interlaced or non-interlaced) or 1280x1024 (interlaced) displays.
  33. Be sure that your monitor supports one of these resolutions.  Do
  34. not try to use a driver with higher resolution than the monitor.
  35.  
  36. The following are recommendations:
  37.  
  38.      -  Install the Utilities provided with the installation
  39.         disks.  Then run the SoftSet utility for all modes.
  40.         Update the Config.sys file using SoftSet. Then re-boot.
  41.         This will properly install SoftMode.Sys.
  42.  
  43.      -  Enable BIOS shadowing to improve BIOS access speed.
  44.         This is often done within your computer's BIOS setup
  45.         utility. Refer to your owners manual for more information.
  46.  
  47.      -  If your computer has a 16 bit data bus, you can take
  48.         advantage of the 16 bit speed increase by installing
  49.         the card into an available 16 bit slot. However,
  50.         a co-resident 8 bit video card, such as an EGA or MDA,
  51.         will cause NCR's VGA to operate in 8 bit mode.  Therefore,
  52.         for 16 bit mode, be sure to remove any such video cards.
  53.  
  54. How to install one of NCR's VGA drivers.
  55. ----------------------------------------
  56.  
  57. Note: Before proceeding, it is recommended that you have an NCR
  58. 77C22E video card installed.  In addition, remove any old
  59. NCR VGA drivers and grabbers from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
  60. This will ensure that the new drivers are installed properly.
  61.  
  62.      1. Move to the directory where Windows 3.0 has been
  63.         installed.  Example:
  64.                      type CD \windows <return>
  65.  
  66.      2. Run the  Windows SETUP program by typing:
  67.                     SETUP <return>
  68.  
  69.      3. Windows setup will display a list of current settings.
  70.         One of the settings is for the display. Move the
  71.         selection bar up or down until the display setting is
  72.         highlighted and press <return>.
  73.  
  74.      4. Then move the selector down until "Other" is selected
  75.         and press <return>. You will be prompted to provide the
  76.         floppy disk with the drivers in a floppy drive.  Setup
  77.         will scan the disk for the NCR drivers and provide you
  78.         with a list to choose from.
  79.  
  80.      5. Select the driver which matches your
  81.         monitor and press <return>.
  82.  
  83.      6. After exiting SETUP, type WIN <return> to start windows.
  84.         If all is well, the Window's Program Manager should
  85.         be displayed normally and with the resolution selected.
  86.  
  87.      Note: If the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory contains a file
  88.            having the same name as the driver file you are
  89.            trying to install, SETUP will not copy the new file
  90.            to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

  94. Video memory size requirements
  95. ------------------------------
  96. Each driver resolution requires a minimum amount of video memory
  97. for proper operation.  These minimums are as follows:
  98.  
  99.      640x480 256 Colors   -  512K bytes
  100.      800x600 256 Colors   -  512K bytes
  101.      1024x768 256 Colors  -  1M   bytes
  102.      1280x1024 256 Colors -  1.3M bytes

  105. Windows 3.0 Enhanced Mode and mouse drivers
  106. -------------------------------------------
  107. Certain mouse drivers can interfere with the display driver when
  108. running Windows 3.0 in Enhanced Mode.  This happens most often
  109. in the higher resolutions (1024x768 and greater).  These drivers
  110. should work correctly with the Microsoft or Logitech mouse drivers.

  121.         HiColor and XGA display drivers for
  122.         Windows 3.1 are included in this latest release.
  123.         Be sure to get the 3.1 Grabber and VDD when
  124.         using the 3.1 drivers.
  125.         The 3.1 drivers are multi-resolution drivers.
  126.         ncr31mfe has 640x480 800x600 resolutions in 64k colors
  127.         ncr31mee has 640x480 800x600 resolutions in 32k colors
  128.         ncr31m8e has 5 resolutions in 256 colors
  129.         Also 3.1 optimizations are included for speed improvments.

  175.         1) Windows locks up after returning from a DOS window
  176.            where a mouse was active.
  177.            Solution: In the system.ini file insert mouse=*vmd
  178.                      under [386Enh] section.
  179.  
  180.         2) Colors are trashed after returning from a DOS window.
  181.            This is due to incompatibility with Serria RamDac's.
  182.            The current set of drivers are built for the SC11487CV
  183.            RamDac.
  184.  
  185.         3) When switching between 256 color and HiColor drivers,
  186.            Icons may become discolored. When Windows adds an item to
  187.            a group, the Icon is saved and used each time windows
  188.            initializes, so, if the Icon was saved as a 256 color
  189.            bitmap and you are in HiColor the Icon may be discolored.
  190.            fix: reset the Icon by calling properties.
  191.

  297. Note on the HiColor Drivers
  298. ---------------------------
  299. Note: The HiColor Drivers will only work well if the system
  300. is equipped with a Sierra HiColor ram dac.  The 64K color drivers
  301. require a Sierra XGA ram dac. The 800x600 HiColor drivers require
  302. ram dacs qualified for 80 MHz.
